Wyscout

This app is built entirely from free public NCAA data, which carries goals, assists, shots and minutes and nothing else. If you have a Hudl Wyscout seat you can upload a player list and the app will match it onto the players already here, then show you what the free data cannot see. Progression, passing, defending and goalkeeping.

Getting the file out of Hudl Wyscout

1. At the top of Hudl Wyscout, click the grid icon, the one with nine boxes.
2. Select Player Lists.
3. Choose an existing list or make a new one.
4. Add whatever set of players you want to the list.
5. Click the columns icon, the one with four boxes, to the right of the Timeframe selector.
6. In the pop-up, click All Columns at the bottom left, then click Apply.
7. At the bottom left, click Export List.
8. Upload that exported spreadsheet here.

Step 6 is the one that matters. A list exported with the default columns is missing most of what makes this worth doing, and the upload will tell you which columns are missing rather than half working. A whole conference is the easiest unit, and it is also the only kind of list this app will rank, for reasons it explains once you upload.

What happens to it

Nothing is stored. The file is read into memory, matched, and held against your browser session only. It is never written to the database or to disk, it is not visible to anyone else, and it is gone when you clear it, when the session ends or when the server restarts. Come back tomorrow and you upload it again. That is deliberate rather than a limitation, because Wyscout data is licensed to whoever exported it and an app that kept a copy would be holding their licensed data for them.

The one thing that does persist is the mapping from a Wyscout team name to a school, LMU Lions to loyola-marymount for instance. That is a public fact about how a club writes its own name, it carries no licensed number, and keeping it is what makes the next person's upload resolve better than yours did.

What it will and will not do

An upload adds information to pages. It never changes a number on one. No rank, rating, percentile or verdict anywhere in this app reads from an uploaded file, so a player page means the same thing whether you have uploaded something or not, and a link you send someone still says what you saw. Rankings drawn from your file live on the match report itself, which is the only page that can tell you which players it ranked over.

Matching works on surname and first initial inside a team and season, because Wyscout abbreviates the given name and carries no shirt number. Share of team minutes is then used as independent evidence. On the two conferences tested by hand it matched 94.5% and 96.0% of players carrying minutes, and a hand-checked adversarial sample of 21 came back 21 correct. Anything it is not sure about is shown to you rather than guessed.

The app currently covers NCAA men's soccer, D1, D2 and D3, 2022 to 2025. A list of women's, NAIA, NJCAA or overseas players will match nothing, and the report will say so rather than leaving you guessing.
